5 Upcoming Events for Durham Creatives

We love community even if it’s outside our spaceship. We’re casting a light from our little ship onto all the other magical ventures going on round town.

GeekCraft Expo

If you love superheroes, comics, movies, or video games, GeekCraft Expo is the event for you. We are talking about wall to wall nerdom where you can support local makers and artisans. It’s basically like a mall, but for geeks. Check it out – May 13th, Durham Armory, Durham, NC, 11am to 6pm. This event is free to the public. Cosplay highly encouraged.

Beaver Queen Pageant

The Beaver Queen Pageant is Durham’s special mix of pageantry, humor, and folly. Contestants take on personalities (ex. Furrabella-Conchita Carramba) and folks vote for their favorite contestant to raise funds for The Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association. This event has it all. WUNC’s Frank Stasio serves as emcee, a Scrap Exchange tent is available where you can construct your very own costume, and food trucks are out in full strength. Plus, there’s a kiddie area with hoses and water toys.

Festival for the Eno

The Festival for the Eno is the primary fundraising event for the beautiful Eno River State Park. The music festival draws thousands of people to the banks of the Eno River to sing, dance, and make merry while learning about natural resource conservation. The New York Times has described the Festival for the Eno as being: “like a giant backyard barbecue for the creative class.” This year there will be over 70 bands, 4 stages, crafts, artisans, food and drink. The festival is running Wednesday, July 4th and Saturday, July 7th, 10:00 a.m. – 6 p.m.

NC Pride Parade

Dating back to the early 1980s, the annual NC Pride Parade and Festival in Durham, North Carolina, is a celebration of the LGBT community and its artists. The one-day extravaganza features a parade filled with floats and marchers, 5k fun run, a live dating show, drag showcases, live musical performances, guest speakers and art displays.

HAWT SAUCE: A Queer Dance Party!
